“Never regard study as a duty, but as the enviable opportunity to learn to know the liberating influence of beauty in the realm of the spirit for your own personal joy and to the profit of the community to which your later work belongs.” (Albert Einstein)

Knowledge is best learnt when it has a social perspective. The students at SSE are involved in various community programmes that motivate them towards social work and social responsibility. Society of Friends of the Sassoon Hospital (SOFOSH) is one such organization. SOFOSH was established by a group of public spirited citizens in August 1964, to supplement the efforts of the hospital by offering a range of patient welfare services. It is a society that provides various services to the Sassoon hospital and runs other community welfare services such as child care centre, family preservation, adoption, nutrition and health education, taking care of the destitute and the deprived in its effort of mitigating suffering and distress.

The students at SSE are actively involved in three main activities with SOFOSH viz. typing and printing assistance; birthday celebrations of Shreevatsa children(Shreevatsa is a special centre run by SOFOSH for the care of tiny “Lodger Babies” who are rescued by the police, orphaned, relinquished by single mothers or sheltered for short-term crisis care); and teaching children at Shreevatsa & Pediatric wards. The frequency of these activities depends on the requirements of the organization.
